Most of the times if your computer USB drivers are not updated, you can end up with many issues with your iPod. So keep your USB drivers updated by following the steps below.

1. Plug your iPod to the computer.
2. Quit iTunes if it is open.
3. Click on the Start menu(bottom left hand corner of your computer), click Control Panel.
4. In the Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools. Note: If you don't see Administrative Tools that means you are on category view , look at the left column in Control Panel for a link that says, "Switch to Classic View," and click it.
5. Once you are in Administrative tools page, double click the Computer Management shortcut.
6. There in the left column you see Device Manager option, click on Device Manager.
7. In the right column, click the plus (+) icon next to Universal Serial Bus controllers to expand this selection.

8. In the drop-down list look for anything related to iPod or Apple, you might see something like "iPod" or "Apple Mobile Device". You may also see yellow colored exclamation mark next to it, which means it needs to be updated.

9. Right-click on the "iPod" or "Apple Mobile Device" in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
10.A Hardware Update Wizard will pop-up, select "Yes, this time only" to allow Windows to connect to the Windows Update Website. Click Next.

11.Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click Next. Windows searches for updated drivers and installs any it finds

Note: During installation, if a message appears stating that the software you are installing "has not passed Windows Logo testing" click Continue Anyway to continue installing the drivers.

If there is any kind of trouble you face during these steps, please let me know through comments so that I can research over that and provide help on it. Thank You

Help!!! A few weeks ago I realised that my Itouch no longer plays videos with the youtube app. After checking my fathers itouch, it also has this problem. So, I updated to a later version of Itunes. This did not help and I uncovered another problem with both Itouch's, that they were not being recognised in itunes or my computer (using windows XP on a PC). Surely both are not faulty and I want to try everything before sending them away for repair! I have tried resetting the ipod, fully charging it, resetting my computer, resetting the ipod settings, changing usb ports, trying it on my laptop, updating itunes, uninstalling itunes and reinstalling it, disabling 3rd party system services, everything! I tried updating USB driver, but 'ipod' does not show up like above. I have tried restoring but when i follow your steps there is no message that comes up on the screen asking me to restore the itouch. The itouch charges when connected to the computer. HELP ME!!!!!

Hi Missynata,
After going though your comments, first of all I would like to appreciate you for trying out almost all the troubleshooting steps which needs to be performed at the first hand. Cheers to you!
OK. Getting back to your issue, initially your iPod touch was not playing videos in the you-tube application. So before trying out any troubleshooting steps I would have recommended you, to check if your iPod is detecting the WiFi signal. If not, then there is no way your iPod will stream you-tube videos. If your iPod did detect the signal and you can connect to internet through Safari app, then it's a matter of concern that you-tube app does not work and we have to troubleshoot your iPod.

Well it can surely be fixed if you restore the iPod to factory settings. But as of now, your iPod does not show up in itunes. So it needs to be fixed. After going through the troubleshooting steps carried out by you, I just feel that we need to try out uninstalling and reinstalling the tunes in a better and technical manner, because sometimes if you do not uninstall all the Apple components from your XP computer, you will end up with this kind of issues. So I will be writing an article on better ways to uninstall and reinstall iTunes very soon.
Thanks
Follow the link below to get the step by step instructions on how to download uninstall and reinstall iTunes the way the Apple recommends.

I went through all of your steps to try and fix my problem, when i got to step 8 there is no Ipod or Apple driver. Is there any way to install that driver with it not being on that list? I will be very happy if you can give me an answer because Apple will not help me because apparently you have to currently be in the United States and I am currently deployed with the military and this issue popped up with my 16G touh, so naturally i thought i needed to update it so i bought the new 64GB and the same problem occurs.
Thank You,
Andrew

Hi Andrew, in case you do not find the ipod or apple driver listed in that list, you will have to restore your ipod in the recovery mode. I have written an article on how to do this.
Thank you
where can i find the recovery article because i am having the same problem as andrew.
thanks.

how do u update the usb driver on a mac??
I have a 2nd gen Ipod touch 8g. The issue I have is that it plays programs on itouch by itself or when you type a word it will type some things by itself, as if the itouch is possess. I have tried resetting and restore but nothing works. Please help.

Thanks
I click on the plus to open up the universal serial bus and i couldn't find anything relating to iPods. Could this be the problem?
Also, it's just my iTouch 32 gb 2 generation that's not showing up, my really old iPod nano shows up perfectly fine.
Any suggestions on how to recover from failed attempt to update to iOS4? I was syncing my iPod Touch and agreed to the update, and now the Touch screen is frozen with a picture of a USB and the iTunes logo. When I plug it into my computer, I get a message that my purchase could not be completed and I should try again later with an unknown error message #-9812. I ran diagnostics and supposedly the computer recognizes that the iPod is connected, it shows on the side menu, but when I click it, I get just an apple in the middle of a blank screen (on the computer) -- no usual sync menu. Any ideas?
My hardware never gets to finish. It says that the wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed. What should I do next ?
Thank you sooooooooo much. I was doing everything that the troubleshoot itunes was telling me to do, but it was working. thanks for the instructions
Thank you for these tips! However, when I attempt to update the drive, my computer crashes to the "blue screen." I have tried this 3 times, on different USB's. Any ideas?
Thanks.
I couldn't fine any "iPod" or "Apple Mobile Device" in device manager(universal serial bus controllers) what shall i do now.
I found the Apple Mobile Device but it didn't had the yellow colored exclamation next to it.

Greatly appreciate the advice. My 6yr old is also thankful as now his itouch is working properly. Thanks for everything.
itunes is not recognizing my ipod, it was fine 2 days ago, i just updated the itunes and since then its not recognizing my ipod. I was trying to update USB driver, tried to update "apple mobile device USB driver", which has a yellow exclamation mark next to it, but it is saying that the best driver software for your device is already installed, however the exclamation mark is still there.
