"I can easily connect to my Linksys router with my 32gig iPod, but cannot for the life of me connect with my wifes 8gig Itouch.  It simply gives me the message "Unable to join ______ " (the network I'm trying to connect to)."

Hi
Most of the time you face this issue with the iPod Touch, that for no reasons this iPod Touch will not connect to your WiFi network while your other iPods, your friends iPod does connect to the same network. Well there are a few troubleshooting steps which you need to try to get this issue fixed.

Please follow the troubleshooting steps given below:

1. RESET your iPod.

2. After it has been RESET, Click on the SETTINGS icon from the main menu.

3. From the Settings menu, you will find an option called RESET. Click on reset.

4. In the reset menu you will find an option called RESET NETWORK SETTINGS. Click on it and wait for sometime until your iPod Touch resets by itself.

5. Once your iPod is back to the main menu, Click on SETTINGS again.

6. You will find an option called WiFi, Click on that.

7. Here in WiFi menu you find an option to turn your WiFi ON/OFF. Turn it ON.

8. iPod will then scan for the available networks around you and it will list down the networks. You see your WiFi name listed there? If Yes follow the steps below.

9.If there is a small lock icon next to your iPod name, it means your network is password protected. Just tap above the network name and if it prompts you to enter your network password, go ahead and enter it and then click JOIN.

Most of the time these steps will resolve your WiFi issue.

In case your iPod did not list down your WiFi name, that means your iPods WiFi device is having trouble detecting wireless network. It needs service from the AppleCare.

If your iPod listed down the network name , but when you tried to join it, still gives the same error message, then all you have to do is try connecting this iPod to a public wireless network like Apple Store or Star Bucks.
If your iPods connects to the public network without any issues, then it just mean that your iPod WiFi settings might be having issues. Follow the steps below to check the WiFi settings:

1. After you see the WiFi name listed down, you will also find a small arrow next to the WiFi name. Click on that arrow.

2. You will find the WiFi settings here.

3.Check out the IP Address here, if it begins with 169... then this is the root of all cause. Just feed in the IP address of your router and save it and also check the other settings like subnet mask, router information matches with the information provided by your WiFi network service provider like LinkSys.

Please let me know what you feel about these troubleshooting steps through your valuable comments.
And if you have any other issues related to iPod/iTunes/iTunes Store, feel free to leave a comment and I will be back with the best solution for your issue.

thaaaaanks a lottt... it worked out
Like Kevin says, this doesnt help at all. I'm having the issue that appears in point 3. My Ipod 1G wont connect to the Wifi at home which I share with my neighbor (WEP encryption) Notebooks connect without a problem, my Iphone connects without a problem, my friends Iphone does so without a problem but the Ipod 1G, 16GB will not
The same Ipod connects to the wifi at work without a problem - WPA encryption

I'm on FW 3.0, have tried infinite restores, network settings resets, downgraded to 2.2.1, back again everything to no avail. The Wifi shows up as connected with 5 bars, but it wont navigate, IP address always starts with 169.*
The question I guess what should I put in manually?? I assume you mean to input the data manually in Static instead of DHCP. I tried putting in the same IP address that the notebook has at this point, also copied the subnet mask and 3 DNS addresses, nothing. Please help, I have no clue what could be the problem

Hi Alex, if your iPod shows the IP starting with 169.***, in that case you ipod will connect to WiFi and it will show the connection bars, but you will not be able to connect using safari etc.. the real problem is with IP. you have to change it. Check out the last point number 3

one thing i found out is that the wireless service password you enter into the ipod touch must be at least 8 characters.....if it is less, the ipod wont connect

Yo, totally worked for me. Thanks a lot. I just hated tweeting the old fashioned way, via the desktop. Now my I-pod touch is back in business. Thanks man.
How do you type in the IP address? When I tap the old IP address that begins in 169, it won't let me enter anything....

if your getting a 169. address that means your having a DNS issue, your unable to resolve web name addresses, your connected to the router, but not the internet as far as how to fix, i'm sorry I havent played around with it enough to figure it out but it should be enough to get you started in the right direction.
I just purchased an additiional IPhone 3Gs, I gave my old one to my wife. Exchanged SIM Cards and turned it on. My Iphone works flawlessly, hers now (my old phone) is unable to see wireless networks. I have done RESET after RESET. I had this happen previously and found a fix as I was wondering through Settings, but I cant remember what I did. I turned something on or something off, and it's is not the WIFI slide, (IT IS ON POSITION). Any suggestions??? By the way the old phone used to work flawlessly, and so does both MAC Books, IPod Touch, Iphone 3Gs. Just hers now wont work. Please advise.
Have the Ipod touch forget your network. It's at the top of the screen. Then click on it and type in your password. The correct IP shows up. I wasn't able to change the IP by clicking on it, but this did it. It works fine now.

i I have purchased new iPod touch 32 gb on June 27 2010. I don’t know what the OS installed on that. After registering it with apple site. I tried to update it to available IOS 4.1 but it hung up during the installation and then it refused to work. I took it to the shop where I purchased it, they restore it with OS 4.0. It’s not able to detect any of the available Wi-Fi networks, we do have Wi-Fi in our office but it doesn’t shows up on my iPod touch 32 GB. Please let me know what can be the issue.is my OS or something else...
Ip adress and other informations about the network are not shown ,why?
Perfect answer........ Thanks a lot.
I had an issue with an iTouch 1G not connecting to my wireless home network while my 3G iTouch and iPhone connected fine. Apple told me this meant the 1G needed a major repair. Apple also said my 1G was a dinosaur, and I should purchase a new one. While in the store a guy told me it was a router problem. I swapped out the router to a D-Link and it now works fine.
My wifi problem is different than the ones listed above. See, whenever i check my wifi settings, it tells me that I'm connected and it even shows the blue semi-circular signal things in the top left hand corner. But when i try to check my email or go to safari, I can't access it. I've already tried resetting the iPod Touch about 5 to 9 times, and I've also pressed the "renew lease" button approx. 30 times. On iTunes, they tell me that my iPod is up to date and all, so I don't get what's wrong. When I first got it, the internet connection was fine. Then the connection broke. After a while, it fixed by itself. And now its broken again. I've been waiting for it to reconnect itself, but so far no such luck. It's been like this for 3-5 months : (
please please please help if you can, thanks

i have a lock symbol next to the wifi connection also????
thank you it worked!
Make sure your computer is authorized on your iTunes account and re-sync. My daughter's ipod touch would not connect because she sync'd when her iTunes was unauthorized. I connected, reauthorized and viola! Presto Connecto-mondo!
